About the role
Where you will make an impact
You will build the cloud and platform foundations behind customer migrations, modernization, and managed services. The role is hands-on and covers infrastructure as code, networking, IAM, Kubernetes, CI/CD, automation, monitoring, and production troubleshooting across AWS or Azure environments.
What you will do
Core responsibilities
- Build and maintain AWS or Azure infrastructure using Terraform and repeatable infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Deploy and operate containerized workloads using Docker and Kubernetes and support platform reliability in production.
- Implement CI/CD pipelines, cloud networking, IAM, secrets handling, monitoring, and operational automation.
- Support on-premises-to-cloud and cloud-to-cloud migrations, application modernization, and platform remediation work.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure, networking, deployment, Kubernetes, and cloud-service failures to root cause.
- Produce clear implementation notes, diagrams, runbooks, and handover documentation for customers and Onyx teams.
What we are looking for
Role requirements
- Practical production experience in cloud engineering, DevOps, infrastructure, or platform engineering, typically two or more years.
- Strong Linux and networking fundamentals with hands-on AWS or Azure, Git, Terraform, Docker, CI/CD, and Kubernetes exposure.
- Ability to automate infrastructure and operational tasks using Bash, Python, or another suitable scripting language.
- Working understanding of IAM, cloud security fundamentals, monitoring, logging, backup, resilience, and cost-aware cloud design.
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline is welcome but not required where equivalent professional experience is demonstrated.
- AWS Solutions Architect Associate, Azure Administrator, Terraform Associate, CKA, CKAD, or similar certifications are preferred rather than mandatory.
Selection process
Practical technical assessment
For technical roles, Onyx evaluates practical engineering judgement alongside experience and certifications. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete or discuss work such as:
- Use Terraform to define a small cloud environment and explain the networking, IAM, security, and state-management decisions.
- Containerize and deploy a small application, add CI/CD and monitoring, and document how another engineer would operate it.
- Troubleshoot a deliberately broken infrastructure, Kubernetes, network, or deployment scenario and explain the evidence used to reach root cause.
What success looks like
Outcomes that matter
- Cloud environments and platform changes are reproducible, secure, and documented through infrastructure as code.
- Deployments and migrations move with clear rollback, monitoring, and operating procedures.
- Infrastructure and Kubernetes failures are diagnosed from evidence rather than repeatedly patched.
- Customer teams receive maintainable environments, runbooks, and handover documentation rather than one-off implementations.
Development at Onyx
Where the role can grow
- Grow toward Senior Platform Engineer, Cloud Architect, or delivery-pod technical leadership.
- Build deeper specialization in Kubernetes, Terraform, cloud networking, security, migrations, FinOps, or observability.
- Pursue approved cloud and platform certifications with Onyx-supported development.
