About the role
Where you will make an impact
You will lead technical discovery and architecture for Onyx Cloud & AI while remaining close to implementation. The role is designed for an engineer who can move between customer conversations, cloud design, migrations, platform engineering, observability, troubleshooting, and mentoring without losing ownership of the final outcome.
What you will do
Core responsibilities
- Lead technical discovery with customer engineering, platform, SRE, security, and leadership teams.
- Design secure, resilient, observable, and cost-aware AWS or Azure architectures for migrations, modernization, and managed services.
- Guide engineers across Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, networking, IAM, observability, and production troubleshooting.
- Review architecture, implementation plans, risks, estimates, and technical documentation before customer delivery.
- Own technical quality during major incidents, migrations, platform changes, and complex customer escalations.
- Mentor Onyx engineers and help turn delivery lessons into repeatable standards, runbooks, and Academy material.
What we are looking for
Role requirements
- Strong hands-on cloud engineering experience, typically four or more years across production environments, with depth in AWS or Azure.
- Practical experience with Linux, networking, IAM, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, Git, troubleshooting, and cloud security fundamentals.
- Demonstrated ability to design target architectures, migration plans, operating models, and technical documentation for real systems.
- Confidence explaining technical evidence, risk, trade-offs, and recommendations directly to customer engineers and technology leaders.
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline is welcome but not required where equivalent professional experience is demonstrated.
- AWS Solutions Architect Associate or higher, Azure architecture credentials, Terraform Associate, CKA, or equivalent certifications are preferred rather than mandatory.
Selection process
Practical technical assessment
For technical roles, Onyx evaluates practical engineering judgement alongside experience and certifications. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete or discuss work such as:
- Review a realistic customer cloud environment and identify architecture, reliability, security, observability, and cost concerns.
- Design an improvement or migration approach and explain the sequence, risks, dependencies, and operating model.
- Present the recommendation as if speaking to a customer CTO and answer technical challenge questions from the interview panel.
What success looks like
Outcomes that matter
- Customer architecture decisions are technically sound, documented, and tied to clear operating outcomes.
- Delivery teams have enough direction to execute migrations and platform changes without avoidable rework.
- Technical risk, cost, reliability, security, and observability concerns are identified early and communicated clearly.
- Onyx engineering standards improve through architecture reviews, mentoring, runbooks, and reusable delivery patterns.
Development at Onyx
Where the role can grow
- Build toward Practice Lead or Principal Architect responsibility as Onyx adds delivery pods.
- Lead customer architecture reviews and mentor engineers across cloud, platform, observability, and SRE disciplines.
- Pursue advanced cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform, security, observability, and architecture certifications supported by Onyx.
Why Onyx
