About the role
Where you will make an impact
This is a selective development pathway for high-potential graduates, National Service personnel, and early-career technologists who want to build serious cloud and infrastructure engineering capability. Participants learn through labs, troubleshooting, documentation, mentorship, and practical projects rather than classroom theory alone.
What you will do
Core responsibilities
- Complete structured hands-on training across Linux, networking, Git, cloud foundations, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, observability, SRE, and operational security.
- Build lab environments, complete engineering exercises, and document technical decisions using Onyx delivery standards.
- Shadow customer and internal engineering work where appropriate and learn from senior Onyx engineers.
- Participate in incident simulations, architecture reviews, code reviews, and troubleshooting exercises.
- Complete a final practical project demonstrating production-minded cloud and observability skills.
What we are looking for
Role requirements
- Open to eligible National Service personnel, recent graduates, and early-career technologists with a serious interest in cloud and infrastructure engineering.
- Basic familiarity with Linux, networking, Git, programming or scripting, or cloud concepts is helpful; evidence of self-directed learning matters more than a long certification list.
- Strong problem solving, curiosity, written communication, reliability, and willingness to learn through hands-on technical work.
- A technical degree or diploma is welcome but applicants with equivalent projects, labs, certifications, open-source work, or demonstrated practical ability may also be considered.
- Entry-level AWS, Azure, Linux, networking, programming, or cloud certifications are an advantage but are not mandatory.
Selection process
Practical technical assessment
For technical roles, Onyx evaluates practical engineering judgement alongside experience and certifications. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete or discuss work such as:
- Complete a short practical lab covering Linux, networking, Git, scripting, or cloud fundamentals.
- Explain your troubleshooting approach and document what you observed, changed, and learned.
- Discuss one technical project, lab, certification journey, or self-directed learning experience in depth with the interview panel.
What success looks like
Outcomes that matter
- Participants can explain and use core Linux, networking, Git, cloud, container, infrastructure-as-code, and observability concepts.
- Technical work is documented clearly enough for another engineer to reproduce and review it.
- Participants demonstrate structured troubleshooting rather than guessing at failures.
- Graduates leave with a practical foundation for Associate Cloud, Platform, Observability, SRE, or related engineering work.
Development at Onyx
Where the role can grow
- High-performing participants may be considered for Associate Cloud, Platform, Observability, SRE, or product-engineering opportunities when business needs and openings exist.
- The pathway is designed to prepare participants for increasingly responsible production engineering work, not to guarantee employment.
- Participants receive a structured foundation for future cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform, observability, and SRE certifications.
